Skills from the Black Church can take you to the Boardroom

More than just Easter speeches, a preview of my conversation with former Fortune 500 executive and author Trudy Bourgeois

Growing up in the Jim Crow South was hard enough for Trudy Bourgeois, former Fortune 500 executive, author and retired equity strategist; but attending a Catholic church where she and her family were one of only a few Black families, felt mostly isolating, and it was also a challenge.

But many Sundays, her grandparents would take her to their church, the Black Baptist church down the lane--and what a difference a few blocks made.

Here she talks about the lessons she learned in that little church that prepared her for some of the top boardrooms in the Fortune 500. Trudy is one of the 13 voices of business leaders across a myriad of industries in Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church (Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing/JVL Media 2026).
