Soul Meets Science

Episode 192 of The Culture Soup Podcast Goes a Little Wonky

When I began coach training in 2019 at The Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute —founded by my mentor coach, Valorie Burton —I assumed every coaching practice was built on science.

That assumption was… off. 🫠

The truth is, evidence-based coach training is still a differentiator, and it's more than just messaging or a couple of data points on marketing materials. It's training. It was months and months of learning, a time and financial investment. It's credentials. It’s also what anchors my forthcoming book Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church (Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing/JVL Media, 2026) in more than just inspiration—it’s rooted in applied neuroscience, positive psychology, and research-backed leadership theory.

The keyword here is rigor, and I went even deeper with the research for this book.

In Part 2 of the "Leadership Revival" series, I’m breaking down the science pillar of the book. It’s how we translate legacy into language the boardroom understands—and how we give leaders tools that actually work.

🎧 New episode drops today on The Culture Soup Podcast ®️, featuring a throwback from one of my first conversations with Valorie back in 2019.
